About this product
The odd one out in this line. Instead of koto five-ply it uses Kiso hinoki three-ply with hinoki carbon, and at 6.5mm it is 0.8mm thicker.
Hinoki three-ply has fewer plies but each is thick, so the blade bends as a whole and returns in one motion rather than in the finely divided response of a five-ply. That behaviour is why hinoki has been used in Chinese penhold play for so long.
It weighs 85g, two grams more than its linemates. Gaining 0.8mm for only two grams is possible because hinoki is a light wood.
If you have only ever played shakehand it may feel foreign. It shares a line name with the three koto blades, but it is better understood as a different object.
